Champions Elect Gong Gungahlin
The Witches took to the field in their final home
game of the season knowing they needed to win
against Gungahlin but well aware that Gungahlin
were desperate to win to keep their semi-final
hopes alive. The first half by the Witches was
arguably the best football they have played this
season. The passing was precise and movement off
the ball was brilliant. It took only 5 mins to
open the scoring when Natina latched on to a
through pass from Kristy and slotted home from a
narrow angle after outpacing the Gungahlin defence.
The free flowing football continued from the
Witches and 11 mins later it was 2-0. In the best
move of the game the ball was switched from left
to right where Natina and Milly carved the
Gungahlin defence to hsreds with slick passing
before picking out Cassie in the centre. cassie
didn't waste the opportunity, slamming her shot
high into the net from 21m. The Witches were in
full flight and when milly took a free kick from
out on the right wing, no-one was surprised when
Natina chested the ball down on the edge of the
box and calmly slid it past the keeper. Not to be
left behind, Milly completed Gungahlin's first
half misery when she challenged the Gungahlin
keeper for a cross, who spilled the ball. Milly
was quickest to react and prodded home on the
stroke of half time. Stung by the humiliating
scoreline, Gungahlin responded by upping the
physical aspect of their game and succeeded in
containing the rampaging Witches during the second
half. The Witches were never under any threat and
totally dominated the tempo but were unable to
finish off in the manner they had in the first.
Full Time 4-0. The Witches now have only one game
to go to wrap up their second successive
Championship.
