Thrilling Final Victory Wraps Up a Great Year.
The Witches arrived at UoC to the news that Amy was
unavailable due to illness but Lizzie passed a late
fitness test and was a definite starter. Their was
an air of nervous excitement as the Witches warmed
up but once the game started it was down to
business. There was little between the two sides in
the first half. The respective defences were doing
an effective job of cancelling out their opponents
attacks and the game became a battle of the
midfield. The heat was affecting both sides but the
tempo never flagged. Despite opportunities at both
ends of the park the game remained scoreless at
half time. The second half was just as torrid as
the first but slowly the Witches were gaining the
ascendancy in the middle of the park, giving their
forwards more opportunities. Cassie burst through
twice in as many minutes, a desperate last ditch
tackle saving Woden the first time and the second
effort saw Cass' shot glide inches past the
post.Milly made inroads but there was no support
then Natina looked hit a shot straight at the
keeper. Then Natina looked certain to score as she
carved up Woden's central defence but a superb save
by the keeper saw her powerful drive deflected for
a corner. At the far end Danni proved that she has
become a top class keeper with a string of
courageous dives at the feet of the Woden forwards.
The Witches finally broke through to score the
winning goal in the 66th minute when Lizzie, who
was having an outstanding game in the middle of
the park, won possession and sent the ball through
to Natina who cut inside before making no mistake
with a brilliant shot from 18m that gave the
keeper no hope. Woden weren't yet finished and
gave the large crowd some nervous moments in the
remaining 14mins as they chased their vanishing
dream. Unfortunately for them, the Witches defence
was impenetrable and the final whistle saw the
Witches claim the double - champions and premiers.
